Background of the Study
Religious practices have historically influenced the preservation or transformation of archaeological sites. In Owo, traditional and modern religious beliefs often shape how heritage sites are maintained or altered. Rituals, pilgrimages, and sacred ceremonies not only reinforce the cultural significance of these sites but can also lead to both intentional and unintentional preservation practices (Akinola, 2023). The interplay between faith and archaeology is evident in the manner in which communities care for historical structures and landscapes. On one hand, religious reverence can protect sites from vandalism and neglect, while on the other, it can lead to modifications that compromise their archaeological integrity (Oluwaseun, 2024). This study explores these dynamics, investigating how religious activities intersect with heritage management. It considers both the protective measures inspired by spiritual values and the challenges posed by religious alterations. By employing ethnographic research and archaeological surveys, the study provides a comprehensive understanding of the impacts of religious practices on site preservation in Owo (Ajayi, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
There is a lack of comprehensive research on the dual role of religious practices in both preserving and altering archaeological sites in Owo. Conflicts between cultural heritage conservation and religious modifications have created challenges for archaeologists and heritage managers, undermining site integrity (Babatunde, 2023). This study seeks to address these challenges by evaluating the impact of religious practices on archaeological preservation.

Objectives of the Study

  • To examine the influence of religious practices on heritage site management.

  • To evaluate the positive and negative impacts of these practices on archaeological preservation.

  • To recommend balanced strategies for conservation that respect religious traditions.

Research Questions

  • How do religious practices affect the preservation of archaeological sites in Owo?

  • What are the beneficial and detrimental impacts of these practices?

  • What strategies can reconcile religious activities with heritage conservation?

Research Hypotheses

  • Religious practices significantly influence the preservation of archaeological sites.

  • Certain religious activities contribute positively to site maintenance.

  • Balanced conservation strategies can accommodate religious practices while preserving heritage.

Significance of the Study
The study highlights the critical role of religious practices in heritage conservation, providing policy recommendations that integrate cultural and religious perspectives for sustainable archaeological preservation (Ibrahim, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This research is limited to the impact of religious practices on archaeological preservation in Owo. It focuses on selected sites influenced by local religious activities.

Definitions of Terms
